How Solar Power for Retail Electricity in Texas Works

It all happens thanks to a concept called a “Solar Renewable Energy Certificate.”
Also called an SREC, it’s the currency of renewable energy in Texas. For every 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity generated from solar energy that’s added to the Texas electricity grid, one SREC is created. The electricity they create is first added to the grid and then mixed with the other forms of renewable and traditional energy. Then, it is shipped to your home by your utility company.
The point of the SREC is to verify that Chariot Energy and other similar energy companies did create the electricity you’re using from 100% solar power. Even more, it’s the way we both contribute to the growth of renewable energy in Texas — the more electricity created from solar power, the more SRECs we create, and the less fossil fuel electricity needed to power the state’s electric gird.
