We purchase goods in dollars and cents, but renewable energy in Texas has a different currency system called renewable energy credits, or RECs. These credits represent all electricity generated by renewable energy. However, solar is special — it has its own subsystem called SRECs, or solar renewable energy credits. They represent all the electricity created exclusively by solar energy that’s been added to the electric grid.
More importantly, without SRECs, we couldn’t tell whether or not the energy being purchased is actually generated from solar. Thus, any responsible energy provider should be buying and selling these credits on your behalf — which is exactly what Chariot does!
